Director, Threat Intelligence PSTA Ashburn, Virginia
Swatting (malicious false emergency calls) continues to disrupt ECC operations, endanger lives, and drain resources. APCO and the Public Safety Threat Alliance (PSTA) surveyed ECC professionals nationwide to understand the scope, tactics, and impact of swatting. This session shares survey findings, highlights practical “red flags” for call identification, and delivers actionable guidance to help ECCs prevent, detect, and respond to swatting. Attendees will leave with tools to strengthen their ECC’s resilience and protect their communities.
Learning Objectives:
Interpret ECC swatting survey results to understand current trends, common targets, and fabricated scenarios impacting emergency communications.
Recognize key indicators and technologies used in swatting calls, including caller ID spoofing, AI-generated voices, and doxxed information, and apply practical “red flag” identification strategies.
Implement best practices and departmental policies for swatting mitigation, including staff training, interagency notification, and post-incident reporting to improve ECC preparedness and response.
